Ayurvedic Autumn Care: Nourish, Restore & Prepare for Winter

Ayurvedic Autumn Care :
Nourish, Restore & Prepare for Winter

Even though this October has been milder than usual, without those crisp, foggy mornings we often expect, the bright orange trees and the sound of children laughing as they jump into piles of crunchy autumn leaves are gentle reminders that autumn is here — and winter isn’t far behind.

After enjoying the last bits of warm weather during the half term and Halloween, and before the Christmas rush of get-togethers begins, this is the perfect moment to slow down and invest in your health and immunity. Autumn gently reminds us to prepare — both body and mind — for the darker, colder days ahead.

The Wisdom of Ayurveda

According to the timeless teachings of Ayurveda, each season brings its own influence on our body and mind. As the air becomes dry and cool, our energy starts shifting, and our body craves warmth, nourishment, and steadiness. Ayurveda suggests making small seasonal adjustments to support balance and resilience.

Embrace the Rhythm of Winter Preparation

Autumn is the perfect time to start your exercise and well being journey. Winter is the season when our appetite and body strength are at their best — an ideal time to build immunity and vitality.  While the thought of staying snuggled under warm sheets sounds tempting, Ayurveda encourages waking up before sunrise (about an hour and a half earlier — yes, it takes some effort!). The quiet stillness of early morning offers a chance to connect with yourself and set a calm tone for the day.

Even if you start feeling hungry early, take a little time for exercise, a brisk walk or yoga with the Sun salutations will rejuvenate your senses. It helps awaken your body, boosts circulation, and clears the mind before breakfast.

Morning Rituals for the Senses

There’s something truly magical about watching an early foggy autumn sunrise while indulging in an Ayurvedic self-care ritual. Begin with a warm oil massage — Abhyanga — using Sesame or Ashwagandha oil to nourish the skin and calm the nervous system. Add a few drops of your favourite essential oil, Lavender oil for a touch of luxury or Cinnamon oil for the warmth.

Follow with a mild herbal body scrub made from natural powders made from Oat, Neem, Licorice . You could add Rose petals for the added luxury and to remove dead skin alongwith excess oil, then take a warm bath or shower. The whole experience feels grounding, soothing, and deeply rejuvenating.

A Simple Weekly Ritual

This routine of warm oil massages and scrubs doesn’t have to be a daily indulgence. Incorporating it even once a week during autumn and winter can make a noticeable difference in your energy, skin health, and overall wellbeing. It’s a gentle way to reconnect with yourself — body, mind, and spirit — as the seasons change.

Little additions in your diet

Enjoying a warm cup of Turmeric spiced latte is most enjoyable while watching the trees shedding the leaves with every breeze.

This is the right time to nourish your body with sweet tasting  seasonal vegtables like Pumpkin, squash , swede or turnips . They can be roasted to enhance their taste or blended into soup with ginger and black pepper to warm up.

Seasonal fruits like apples and pears can be eaten raw or made into chutney to enjoy whole year round.

Daily support with herbal supplements

Autumn is perfect time to support your immunity for harsh winters, a warm herbal tea made from Cinnamon, ginger, pepper , Long pepper or Supplements like Tulsi and Amla help to support the immunity.
